Subsea Technology and Rentals Ltd (STR) have recently boosted its equipment inventory with the purchase of a Sonardyne Mini-Ranger 2 Ultra-Short Baseline (USBL) underwater positioning system.
Quick to install and simple to use, Mini-Ranger 2 has the ability to simultaneously and precisely track up to 10 subsea targets (e.g. divers, ROVs and structures) over ranges of up to 995 metres, extendable to 4,000 metres.
These features mean that Mini-Ranger 2 is ideal for nearshore operations on small survey vessels and construction barges that need survey grade positioning performance without the cost and complexity of a deep water USBL solution.
Scott Johnstone, STR’s Managing Director said “STR are delighted with the addition of the Sonardyne Mini-Ranger 2 systems to our rental inventory. With systems already in our rental pool, we are seeing an increase in customer demand and through continuous investment, this will allow STR to service our customers and continue to deliver cost effective solutions for the latest marine technology”.
Sales Manager with Sonardyne, Paul Griffiths, added; “Mini-Ranger 2 is the ideal technology to support short-term surveys and projects. In standard configuration, it can be shipped internationally without the need for an export license and once it arrives at a client’s location, it can be installed and ready to begin work in a few hours. We’re confident that STR will quickly see a return on their investment.”

Subsea Technology and Rentals (STR), a multi-disciplinary technology company specialising in the design, production and rental of innovative marine survey equipment for the subsea construction, geophysical, ROV inspection and environmental sectors, unveils its new subsea rechargeable battery pack (SeaCell) and charger system (SeaCharge) to complement their existing portfolio of specialist equipment.
Ahead of this exciting launch, the research and development team at STR’s Head Office in Great Yarmouth have invested in a substantial development programme to generate a battery pack and charger capable of delivering a reliable, high power solution for underwater systems.
The STR battery pack employs environmentally acceptable NiMH technology and takes full advantage of Microcontroller technology to ensure reliable performance throughout the service life of the pack. The system incorporates voltage, temperature and charge/discharge current monitoring. The battery pack also includes output overload, short circuit and over-discharge protection.
The charger system is fully automatic and has been designed to yield optimal performance and reliability from the battery pack. The system features battery refresh, two-stage bulk charging and pulsed trickle charging to extend battery life.
The subsea battery pack is housed in a 3000m depth rated stainless steel housing. Stainless steel has been chosen to take full advantage of its excellent corrosion resistance.
The battery and charger are shipped in a custom ruggedized waterproof case and comes complete with cables and manual.
Neil Jackson, Sales and Operations Manager at STR said: “We’re very excited to be launching this new product to coincide with Ocean Business 2015. The exhibition will be the perfect platform from which to showcase the SeaCell and SeaCharge to industry professionals and we’re confident that its versatility, durability and technical capabilities will meet the demands of our global customers across all sectors.

Subsea Technology and Rentals (STR), a multi-disciplinary technology expert specialising in the design, production and rental of innovative marine survey equipment have added Optimal Ranging’s ORION pipe and cable tracker systems to its selection of underwater detection systems.
ORION is Optimal Ranging’s new flagship product for Underwater Utility surveying. Extending LIBRA’s Fieldsens™ technology ORION now includes MultiSens™ and is available at STR in two, four, and six sensor configurations. ORION is rated to a depth of 2000m, suitable for nearshore and deep-sea ROV survey and mountable on other platforms such as a sled or wing. ORION is compatible with leading hydrographic survey software including EIVA, QINSy, and HYPACK.
The ORION underwater utility survey system brings the power of model-based processing to cable and pipeline Depth of Burial (DoB) surveys. The method is based on the optimization of data from multiple sensors against a model of the magnetic field expected from an underwater power cable carrying an AC tone (actively applied or passively present). System accuracy is estimated and presented in real-time.
Pradeep Pandey, Chairman and CEO of Optimal Ranging said: “We are delighted to be working with an experienced technology company like STR to introduce our ORION system to the subsea industry and we look forward to building a strong relationship with STR and their customers.”
Neil Jackson, Sales and Operations Manager at STR said: “The ORION cable tracking system is already of real interest to our customers working in the offshore renewables sector who are looking for new and improved ways of carrying out depth of burial surveys on the vast number of wind farm power cables in the North Sea and further afield.”
